SEO for Plumbers: How to Rank in Google Maps and Search

A plain-English SEO plan for plumbing companies: Google Business Profile, reviews, service and city pages, listings and links, in the order that moves rankings.

SEO for plumbers comes down to two places on Google: the map pack (the three listings with a map) and the regular results below it. Most search calls for a plumber come out of the map pack, so start there.

How does Google pick who shows in the map pack?

Google says local results depend on three things: relevance, distance and prominence.

  • Relevance: how well your profile and site match the search. If you want "water heater repair" calls, that phrase needs to appear in your services, categories and pages.
  • Distance: how far you are from the person searching. You can't move your shop, but service areas and city pages help you show across the towns you cover.
  • Prominence: how well known you are. Reviews, links, mentions on other sites and your regular search rankings all count.

Step 1: Fix your Google Business Profile

  • Set your primary category to Plumber. Add secondary categories only for work you do, like Water heater installation service or Drainage service.
  • List every service with a short description.
  • Set your service areas to the towns you serve.
  • Keep your hours accurate, including after-hours if you take emergency calls.
  • Upload photos from real jobs, trucks and crew. Skip the stock photos.
  • Post updates and offers. Posts won't rank you on their own, but an active profile gives searchers a reason to pick you.

Step 2: Build a review habit

Text a review link after every completed job, and have the tech mention it before leaving. Reply to every review, good or bad, and mention the service and town when it fits. A few reviews a week for a year beats twenty in one week and then nothing. More on why Google reviews matter for plumbers.

Step 3: Build service and city pages

Your site needs one page for each core service and one for each town you want work in. A page called "Drain Cleaning in Jenks" with photos from Jenks jobs, a Jenks review and your number at the top can rank for that search. Your homepage can't rank for all of them.

For each page:

  • Put the service and town in the page title, headline and URL.
  • Answer what people ask before they call: price range, how long it takes, whether you work weekends.
  • Add real photos, a review from that area and a tap-to-call button.
  • Link to the page from your menu or a services page.

Write each city page from scratch. If you copy one page and swap the town name, Google has no reason to rank the copies. Our guide to plumbing website design covers what else each page needs.

Step 4: Get listed in the right places

Your business name, address and phone number should match everywhere they appear: Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, BBB, Angi, Nextdoor, manufacturer dealer locators and your chamber of commerce. Fix listings with an old phone number or address first.

Links from local sites carry the most weight. Sponsor a youth team, join the chamber or home builders association, and ask the manufacturers you install for to list you as a dealer.

Step 5: Cover the technical basics

  • Your site loads fast on a phone.
  • Your phone number is a tap-to-call link on every page.
  • Each page has its own title and meta description.
  • Your site has Plumber or LocalBusiness schema with your name, address, phone and hours.
  • Google Search Console is set up, so you can see which searches find you.

How long does SEO take for a plumbing company?

Profile and review work can move your map ranking within two to three months. New service and city pages take three to six months to rank, longer in big metros with dozens of competitors. If you need calls this month, pair SEO with PPC for plumbers.

SEO for plumbers FAQ

What is local SEO for plumbers?

Local SEO is the work that gets a plumbing company into Google's map pack and local results: your Google Business Profile, reviews, service and city pages, and matching listings across the web.

Do plumbers need a blog to rank?

No. Service and city pages do more for a plumber than blog posts. A blog helps when it answers questions customers ask before they call, like what a slab leak repair costs.

Can I do SEO for my plumbing business myself?

Steps 1 and 2 take a few hours a month, and you can do them yourself. Pages, listings cleanup and technical work take more time. Hand those off if you'd rather run jobs. See what a plumbing marketing agency does and costs.
